Puppies and the Pack
The pups were born 6/21/06. First came the girls (Grace, Glory and Faith) then came the 3 boys (Courage, Brazen and Pride). Quoia has been an absolutely incredible mom. And the rest of the pack has been tender and loving.
The pups and mom spent most of their days in the house in the beginning. Once the pups were big enough we attached a kennel for the babies to the barn. This kennel was in the middle of the fenced in yard with he rest of the pack surrounding the pups. I remember the first day I put them out there. The entire pack surrounded the kennel. They laid there watching the pups, those that were not sleeping/laying around the kennel were just a few feet in front of the rest being "the watchers" They would place them selfs just cresting the small hill, facing the house and the driveway so that they could stand look out. Dogs that you never saw from out the window were laying in the middle of the yard "watching " over the pups. Even Primus and Outlaw left their usual stations from up against the house and became "watchers"
In time as the pups grew a little older we would let them run the back yard with the pack. They were about 6 weeks the first time we let out with everyone. The pack was playful yet gentle and absolutely loved each and every pup. Tantrum and Havok played and important role as babysitters. Legend and Quoia stood out from the rest. It was clear that these two were far more. Quoia would always know where each one was, what they were doing and who they were playing with. She patrolled the yard going from pup to pup giving a reassuring nudge and a playful kiss. Legend would play with each one individually but was quick to run and check things out with anyone that made a noise, a whimper or whom he had not seen in a few moments.
Over the next few weeks the pups grew and some of the pack resumed their normal routines and were not as focused on the babies. They'd go and check in but did not seem to feel the need to surround them 24x7. Except Legend. Normally he spends his days either on the back deck close to the door or in front of the fence looking out. Not since the pups have been in the back. At any point of the day while the babies are outside you can look out the window and see Legend poised under the pine tree, directly in front of the pups......
The pups are now 9 weeks and they have turned into little "big dogs". They run with Havok, lay with Tantrum, play peek a boo with Mayhem, patrol the back with their mom and are learning to up root trees from their dad. It amazing what these 6 little souls have brought to the pack.
